20 Things That Happen in 1 Minute

-- Foodservice and consumer losses accounted for (only) 26 percent of edible food supplies.
-- Food losses occur throughout the food system, including...
.... Pre-harvest losses due to severe weather, disease, and predation
.... Storage losses due to insects, mold, deterioration, shrinkage, and spoilage
.... Removal of inedible portions — bones, blood, peels, pits, etc.
.... Discard of substandard products (bruised fruit, etc.), and...
.... Dairy products and fresh fruits and vegetables accounted for half of retail losses; fresh fruits and vegetables accounted for nearly 20 percent of consumer and foodservice losses.
-- While some food is recoverable, some is not ....
.... Livestock condemned at slaughter because of disease
.... Diseased or otherwise unsafe produce
.... Spoiled perishable food, including meat, dairy, and prepared items
.... Losses of edible portions associated with processing, such as skin and fat from meat and poultry, and peels from produce.
-- Plate scraps are appropriately discarded at eating establishments out of health considerations

In addition to the above, consider the withdrawal (i.e., food wastage) of crops from the food chain for the production of automotive fuel.
-- The U.S. ethanol industry relies almost exclusively on corn, consuming 20 percent of the available corn supply in 2006
-- The U.S. biodiesel industry relies almost exclusively on soybean oil as a feedstock.

From the original statistic, one could infer that wasteful Americans toss away 60 tons of food a minute. A more realistic picture would have to deduct unavoidable waste (weather, insects, disease, etc.) and factor in the loss to the food supply from government-mandated alternative fuel production.
Still, it won't hurt most of us to eat 5% less in 2010 than we did in 2009. Though over-consumption is not classified as 'food waste', we could be helping to feed millions around the world with just a little self-restraint.
Let's also consider redirecting food sources from the huge pet food industry. Maybe you don't want to give up your beloved dogs and cats. The least we can do is to neuter our pets. Millions would be saved from starvation if all our Fidos and Fluffys could never breed again.
