Photoshop? You can see some discoloration on the area just below the thumb.

So confusing! My brain hurts too.

I think it's not a question of photoshop but rather a question of perspective: the right side of the upper piece (in front of the picture) is actually the top side of the lower piece - so the piece that looks like it was screwed on top is actually screwed behind(!) the upper part of the other piece of wood.
