Interesting graph that illustrates internet speeds and costs around the world

A very interesting graph that illustrates internet speeds and costs around the world. The most astonishing fact? Japan and South Korea's super fast internet speed, and America's abysmal lag.

Yes, we have so high-speed internet access here in Japan. It is mainly FTTH and sometimes ADSL.

ADSL is dominant in my area, it't reliable but nowhere near what we could have.

in Japan, I have a fiber optic connection at 100Mbps or about 12MB/sec for about $40/month with unlimited bandwidth and an IP phone with calls to anywhere in Japan for 8cents/3minutes and about $1/minute for international calls but I use Skype. I get 90% of my connection speed. I don't understand why in the UK they call 1Mbps broadband, it's a scam!

Here in Sweden I pay $34 /month and have about 70mb/s down and 60 mb/s up. Makes me a happy camper!

I'm from Japan, and doing business in Boston (http://beaupix.com) but you know what the real problem? There are more exciting internet based services here than in Japan. Well, Posterous is certainly one, but on more high bandwidth apps, youtube, sugarsync, dropbox, Pandora, etc. Things like Skype and other p2p technology based apps may run better in Japan tho.

Why did this happen? Japanese leaders were very concerned that Japan fell behind in the internet technology, and they did some sort of internet new deal policy, while US was busy with NASDAQ bubble and dot com bubble. Those stupid politicians spent money on the infrastructure but didn't implement any policy to facilitate high tech startups, who are most likely to start innovative internet based apps. On the other hand, Bill Clinton didn't even know how to get his money using ATM, and George W Bush showed his ignorance by teh "internets" but things are sort of okay, thanks to smart entrepreneurs and venture capitalists.

in reply to Ryuji: the Japanese government spent the money to install the lines but then the whole of Japan would fit into the State of Texas!

Well, the government did not spend the money directly... but either way, Japan has the area comparable to California, but the population is half of that of the US.

It is interesting to see the speeds, and wounder what the comparisons will be in 5 or ten years.

But the chart! Edward Tufte would cringe. Just what does that pie chart indicate? :)

I can assure you that here in Italy, average price/month is nowhere near the 1$-5$ range the graphs shows, there is not even a single offer at this price/month. It is about 15€ = 22$ and that brings us at the red range. Thanks for the graph though

Lucky me. I live in Spain, which, after Mexico and Greece, has the worst internet access in the developed world.

Let's not forget that there are 195 countries in the world, so these top 20 are pretty privileged really - the digital divide.

Keeping the global perspective is important for Americans, who tend towards center of the universe thinking. This is a good refresher for that - along with the scale comment, size of Japan, size of the U.S. Then, there is our nat'l debt issue as it applies to what is funded/supported. -- Good post, thanks!

Omg, and here we pay 68$ monthly for 1mbps !!!!!! that's really insane... I guess my country is the most expensive country in terms of internet prices and if you want to sign for 30 mbps you have to pay 217.5 $ monthy!!!!! OMG it's seriously insane...
