I agree with Oliver. The only time I have ever bought bottled water is if I've been caught out somewhere with absolutely no way to get anything else to drink. I always take bottled water, refilled from the tap, in the car with me.

It's horrendous how people waste money and ruin the environment under the false belief it's healthier or it's somehow 'trendy' or 'fashionable' to drink it.

Really Ian? I don't know one person who drinks bottled water because it's trendy or fashionable. No Gucci purse will EVER match a clear plastic bottle. Maybe it's more convenient and tap water tastes like sewage? Here's a cookie for your bottled water accomplishments.

Some restaurants in major cities have even employed water waiters to serve particular bottled waters to go with certain dishes.

That's what I mean by trendy and fashionable. Also I know of people that will, for example, buy Fiji water, simply because they feel they're making some kind of statement by drinking it.

In most western countries at least, most tap water is perfectly acceptable and safe to drink. I've never had tap water that tastes like sewage yet.

I drink glassfuls of tap water every day, and haven't suffered any ill effects.

I agree. New York City water is called "city champagne." It taste good and I think is  generally pure and clean- which is not always true of bottled water.

I hate when you are looked at as if you are crazy when you order tap water in a restaurant in Europe. In Germany you often can't even order water without carbonation! Anyway that always surprised me in a continent which is generally much more environmentally aware than in other countries.

Guys - WAKE UP!!
Stop wasting energy on this, you will never get rid of bottled water, no matter what you say and think, it is still healthier, cleaner, safer, more convenient AND CHEAPER than tap water.
You can choose to drink your poisoned tap water and you can stay sick and you can get your cancer, which is way dearer in the long term.
So stop spreading poison and trying to make people feel bad, it's only making you feel bad.
If 40% of bottled water is from the tap, don't drink them, drink proper natural mineral water. even so, the 40% are at least filtered and ARE checked more thoroughly than tap water.
What you should do is go to a bottling plant and see how many times the water is checked compared to your tap water, I GUARANTEE you will not drink tap water after you see what is in it and what is added to it.

Really - WAKE UP - you are not making a difference on this argument, it is only frustrating you and making you feel better that you think you are trying to do something good for the environment, but you're not.

Wow, what a troll!
Yeah, your right, tap water gives cancer and is more expensive that good old road transported bottle water...

I have woken up. I am not going to buy bottled water, when I can drink what I have already paid for from the tap. My parents, and grandparents didn't have the option of bottled water. They drank tap water, and it did them no harm either, and arguably, tap water has more stringent safety regulations applied to it now, than 25 or 50 years ago, and water technology treatment has advanced in that time too.

So that's aside from any 'feel good' or 'do right for the environment' concerns that I might have.

The bottled water manufacturers can stick it where ever they like. Tap water is fine for me. I don't need to swell the corporate coffers anymore than they are already.

Corporate coffers?? governments are way worse.
Read the following article then start thinking, that's if the lead, fluoride and other cancer causing toxins haven't already limited your reasoning factors...

Cheers to clean chemical free water, that's the water your parents and grand parent drank Ian, not the chemical cocktail that comes out of the tap now that you call water.

One of the best alternatives to bottled water that I found was the bottle-less water cooler. We switched to one in our office already. To learn more about what bottle-less water coolers are, visit

It saved me money and I went green! Highly recommended!

Hello,
My friends and I are doing a social justice project on the effects of plastic water bottles on the environment. We are looking for ways we can bring awareness to this topic, and how we can help illuminate this problem locally. We have looked at your site and found a lot of useful information, but are wondering if there are any new stats for 2009/2010/2011. Any other useful information or other things that may be useful to our project would be very helpful!
Thank-you,
Students of Glenrosa Middle School’s Aces Program.

Hi Glenrosa,
Thanks for looking at my site- I don't have any new information at this time, but I'd love to know more about your program.
Take care,

Thank-you for replying.
Our school has an elective course called Social Justice (otherwise known as the ACES program). We focus on social justice isuues and what we can do to help. At the moment our class is focussing on the environment. The program does have a website if you would like more information, but it hasn't been updated in a while. Here's the link if you would like to check it out :)

Take care,

Thanks.

Oh ya, good idea. We shall tell that to our teacher because we do not have access to the website. Do you know anything that will capture our fellow students attention when it comes to our bottled water project?

A movie or a cartoon always attracts attention. Or a survey.
Good luck!

Apologies for having to reach out to you like this, but I made a quick trip to the UK and had my bag stolen from me with my passport and credit cards in it. The embassy has cooperated by issuing a temporary passport, I just have to pay for a ticket and settle Hotel bills. To be honest,i don't have money with me,I've made contact with my bank but the best they could do was to send me a new card in the mail which will take 2-4 working days to arrive here.i was thinking of asking you to lend me some quick funds that i can give back as soon as i am out of here,i really need to make a last minute flight that leaves in a few hours.

I can furnish you with info on how you will get me the money. You can reach me via hotel's desk phone, the number is, +44701738 472317.

Thanks,
Lynn
