What a great idea for vending machines in general. I read somewhere that someone was punching holes for drainage in rolling trash cans, filling the bottom with Styrofoam peanuts, adding some lawn cloth, soil and veggies (in that order from bottom to top). The lid acted as protection against cold and varmints and the can could be rolled around to the best sun during the day. Kept a lot of "stuff" out of the landfill!

I'll see if I can find the magazine article this evening. I haven't found a similar idea online yet...but I did find this: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1095047/garbage_can_gardening_how_to_get_started.html?cat=22 and if you search for "garbage can gardening," you can find some videos, too - some great ideas!
